math@Mansfield (Library) has tutors: 6:30pm – 9:00pm on Sunday–Thursday

- Monday (23 January 2017) — first class of Spring 2017 semester
- Chapter 1 (
*Linear Functions and Change*) uses ideas about**functions**to review topics you should have studied several times during the algebra courses that are prerequisite for this Precalculus course. - Study section 1.1 (
*Functions and Function Notation*) and work on these items at end of the section (none to hand-in).-
*skills refresher*: s7, s9 -
*exercises*: 3, 7, 11 -
*problems*: 29,**33**

**Note**: in assignments for subsequent sections of our text, these will be cited generically as "**problems**" with a semicolon used between the*skills*,*exercises*, and*problems*categories. -
- Study section 1.2 (
*Rate of Change*) and work on problems s3, s9; 3, 7, 11,**13**;**21**, 25 (none to hand-in). - Study section 1.3 (
*Linear Functions*) and work on problems s3, s9; 5, 9,**13**; 15,**21**(none to hand-in).

- Chapter 1 (
- Tuesday [d02]
- Study section 1.4 (
*Formulas for Linear Functions*) — try to solve each of its examples before reading the text's discussion, then compare your approach with the authors'. Finish by working on problems s5, s7; 11, 15, 35; 37, 39, 43, 49, 55, 57,**61**(none to hand-in). - Study section 1.5
(
*Geometric Properties of Linear Functions*) and work on problems s3, s5, s7; 1, 3; 7, 11, 15, 19, 23 (none to hand-in). - WeBWorK, a free system, will be used for graded online homework by
students in Precalculus (m151).
- WeBWorK will be demonstrated during Tuesday's class.
- The first online problem-solving assignment,
*day-02*, includes some problems adapted from the text problems listed above for sections 1.1 through 1.5. This online assignment will close Saturday, 28-January @ 11 PM; answers to all problems (and solutions to most) will be available online after that due-date.

- Study section 1.4 (
- Wednesday [d03]
- Study section 1.6 (
*Fitting Linear Functions to Data*) and work on problems 1, 5, 7,**9**(none to hand-in). - Study section 2.1 (
*Input & Output*) and work on problems s3, s7, s8; 3, 5; 19, 20, 23, 25 (none to hand-in). - Some of those text problems will be the basis of items in
WeBWorK assignment
*day-03*(due Monday, 1 Feb @ 11 PM), others will appear in subsequent WeBWorK assignments.

- Study section 1.6 (
- Friday (27 January 2017) [d04]
WeBWorK:
day-02 closes Saturday at 11 pm
- Solve the following five problems; write-up your solutions,
show your work and interpret your results.
**section**1.1 1.2 1.3 1.4 1.5 **problems**32 24 30 46 8 - Please write legibly using dark pencil or pen.
- Print your name and the due-date in the upper-right corner.
- If two or more pages are used, then staple them in upper-left corner.
- Hand-in your written homework at the
**start**of class on the due-date.

- Study section 2.2 (
*Domain & Range*); work on problems s1, s3, s9; 1, 7, 9, 13; 23, 25, 31,**37**(none to hand-in) - Study section 2.3 (
*Piecewise Defined Functions*); work on problems s5, s7, s10; 3, 5, 10; 17, 19, 23, 25 - Some of those problems will appear in WeBWorK assignment
*day-04*(due Tuesday, 31 Jan @ 11 PM), others will be used in subsequent WeBWorK sets of problems.

- Solve the following five problems; write-up your solutions,
show your work and interpret your results.
**looking ahead**(after this quick review): our pace for the remainder of this course will be slower. Most remaining sections of the text will be studied at the rate of one section per day.
